Painting Candles

Materials Needed

  • Sponge
  • Scissors
  • Plain candle
  • Small plate or candle holder
  • Acrylic craft paint
  • Paint tray (e.g., foil pie plate or Styrofoam tray)

Instructions

Cover your work surface with newspaper or plastic. Cut out a small, simple shape from the sponge. If the candle can stand on its own, place it on the small plate. If not, secure it in a candle holder. Pour a small amount of paint into the tray. Dip the sponge shape into the paint, dabbing off any excess on an unused area of the tray. Lightly press the sponge onto the candle, creating a pattern or design of your choice. Turn the candle or candle holder as you work to paint all sides. If you want to switch paint colors, thoroughly rinse the sponge before dipping it into the new color. Allow the paint to dry completely before burning the candle.

Additional Decorating Ideas. Instead of cutting out a shape, cut a small piece of the sponge and lightly dab the entire candle with paint. Once the first color dries, apply another color, and repeat if desired. Use a brush to add polka dots, stripes, zigzags, or any other design.
